New Open Government Chief Named

A longtime journalist has been named to lead the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government.

Kent Flanagan was named executive director of the group this week, according to The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/tmPWUO ).

TCOG is a nonprofit alliance of media, citizen and professional groups committed to promoting government transparency. Among its members are The News Sentinel, The Associated Press, Common Cause and the League of Women Voters.

TCOG works to educate the public about Tennessee’s open meetings and open records laws and advocates on behalf of transparency with lawmakers and other elected officials.

Flanagan is a former bureau chief for AP and journalist in residence at Middle Tennessee State University. He also has worked for the Shelbyville Times-Gazette and newspapers in San Antonio and San Angelo, Texas; and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

He replaces TCOG founding director Frank Gibson, who is now public policy director for the Tennessee Press Association.
