Cigarette Prices Rise Again In New Year
The makers of cigarettes like Marlboro and Virgina Slims have raised their whole sale prices, which mean consumers will also have to pay more taxes when purchasing cigarettes. Cigarette wholesaler Reynolds Altria, American, and Lorillard officially increased the price of their cigarettes Monday. According to Market Watch, the increase in price will also add an extra 5 to 9 cents in tax per package of cigarettes. With a 9 cent increase, if smokers smoke a pack a day, they could spend up to $30 extra per year. “You know a lot of people are complaining about the prices because a lot of people don’t have jobs right now,” said Susan Adams, an employee at Old Medina Market in Jackson. Smoker David Schachle said ,”Of course I don’t like it, but we all need to stop smoking any ways. So if that gets us to quit a little more or get more state money in, I guess it’s a good trade.” Adams said more and more smokers are taking matters into their own hands and rolling their own cigarettes to save money.
