Legislators Meet with Economic Development Initiative
Local and state leaders get together to talk education and how state support should continue. Tennessee lawmakers from all across West Tennessee came to Jackson to meet with local leaders. The Regional Economic Development group encouraged state lawmakers to provide adequate money for educational programs. Programs pushed by REDI are based in the idea that a highly and adequately educated public helps attract companies and businesses to the Volunteer State. “As you know we lag behind the state in education attainment levels, so that is a big push for REDI,” said Lisa Hankins, director of REDI. “There are some things with funding for eduication that are vital to this area. Our kids need funding to get the financial aid to go to school. So, I think that is going to be our hot topic.” State lawmakers this year are expected to modify the way money from the Tennessee Education Lottery is given out to students at Tennessee colleges and universities.
