Gang activity by young people in the city of Jackson was the topic of conversation Thursday in a meeting hosted by Mayor Jerry Gist. Police officers, along with youth and community advocates were part of the meeting to discuss the city’s Youth Master Plan. The plan completed in 2008, as part of the city’s Safe Neighborhoods campaign and specifically addresses youth services that focus on crime and neighborhood safety. The mayor said he called the meeting after what seems like an increase in youth and youth gang activity in the city. “We divided up into two groups, as the meeting concluded this morning, one working on, working in a neighborhood situation taking it neighborhood by neighborhood and the other looking at jobs components for our young people to get a little money in their pockets, especially during the summer, ” said Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist. The mayor said he expects the groups to work quickly. He said he would like to have recommendations that can be presented to the city council within four to six weeks.
