Crockett Co. Sportsplex Could Lead to Tax Hike
A new sportsplex is being considered for the citizens of Crockett County. The proposed site, located next to Maury City Elementary School would consist of baseball fields, softball fields, soccer fields, a place to play flag football and a walking trail. The cost would be between $2.4 million and $3.4 million. “There is no-one on that county commission that doesn’t think that’s a good idea. It’s a tremendous idea but at what cost and can the county afford it, ” said Crockett County Mayor Gary Reasons. “We are certainly hopeful that there will be a significant fundraising effort between now and the end of February,” said Michael Mansfield, chairman for the sportsplex committee. How much would he want the county to pay? “At this point it’s unclear. We are hopeful that fundraising efforts will make it to such an extent that the county can’t pass up,” said Mansfield. “That would eventually at some point could initiate an increase in taxes because you can’t spend money without appropriating the funds some type of way, ” said Mayor Reasons. The commision must decide whether to move forward with the process by May 21. “I believe it can happen with the support of the community and we will find out during the town hall meeting here in February if there is enough support,” said Mansfield. “It will come down to the county commission and the citizens if there is enough support for it,” said Mayor Reasons.
