Whiteville Asks for Federal Suit to be Dropped

Could the cross controversy in Whiteville be coming to an end? The city is now asking the suit against it be dropped because there is no longer a cross on top of the city water tower. Last October, a group called the Freedom from Religion Foundation sued on behalf of a person who lives in Whiteville who claimed the cross was offensive. Mayor James Bellar eventually had one arm of the cross removed, which attorneys said made the lawsuit moot. However, the foundation said it is filing a protective order to shield the identity of the person who first contacted them, based on hostility in the community and comments by the mayor.
