Original Tuskegee Airman Dies
One of the original Tuskegee Airmen has died in Louisville.
Julius Calloway Jr. was among about 1,000 men who trained in Tuskegee, Ala., during World War II and became the first black pilots, navigators and bombardiers in the U.S. military.
Porter Funeral Home said Calloway died Monday at his home. He was 87.
Relatives told The Courier-Journal that he will be remembered as a brave pilot who was able to accomplish his goal of flying (http://cjky.it/xnWByi).
Calloway’s brother, Irvin Calloway, said his older sibling wanted to fly from an early age “and he was able to achieve that dream.”
Julius Calloway’s love of flying stayed with him his whole life. He trained several pilots after the war and later worked for the Louisville and Jefferson County Air Board.
