Lane College Requests Partial Lane Ave. Closure
Lane College officials think the city should close down vehicle access to a portion of Lane Avenue, but some city officials do not agree. According to the Jackson Planning Department, a proposal signed by Lane’s president Dr. Wesley McClure requests Lane Avenue be closed to vehicles from Hayes to Middleton Street. The application indicated closing the street would create safer pedestrian travel and could increase the overall safety on campus. However, fire department officials think this could actually become a safety hazard and are against the proposal. “I did the research for the fire department. I presented it to the planning department who will ultimately present the compilation of everything to the planning department on Wednesday the 1st. But it seems to be this may be the consensus of all the staff that was surveyed on this,” said Jackson Fire Marshall Wayne Arnold. President McClure with Lane College did not return calls to 7 Eyewitness News regarding the matter. The planning department is expected to vote on the proposal February 1.
