Vandy Battles Crows With Cannons

Cannon fire and fireworks will be used by Vanderbilt University in Nashville to drive away roosting crows.

The operation will begin Wednesday evening and run through Feb. 8. Propane percussion cannons and pyrotechnics will be used, but no projectiles.

University officials said the campus has been besieged by birds for almost 12 years. Loud squawking and potentially hazardous bird droppings have resulted.

The birds are attracted to the area because of the large number of magnolia trees on campus.
