Elderly Lady To Start Animal Shelter

A 92-year-old lady in Obion County had her heart set on starting an animal shelter. It was a brave move by one lady who had taken it upon herself to save stray and abandoned animals. Doris Tanner said a traumatic experience with a stray cat she had to put down is what inspired her to start an animal shelter. “I came home and I cried, and I cried, and I cried, and I didn’t even know the cat!” said Tanner. But the 92-year-old said she wished more people cared about animals like she did, “People just dump their little pets and their little litters that they don’t want. They just dump them out in the field somewhere or out in the country.” Many residents said they noticed a size-able amount of animals stranded everywhere in Obion County. Officials said there was not a stable place for those abandoned animals to go, and if left abandoned experts said they would get ran over or eaten by coyotes. “People need to realize their responsibility if you have a pet. It’s like having a child. If you get tired of it or it’s not as cute anymore, you don’t go dump it,” said Archer. Archer believes it was even against the law. Tanner and Archer had been contacted by numerous locals to help in this endeavor.
