THP Teams with Cargonet to Stop Cargo Theft
The State Patrol has entered into a new alliance in an effort to combat the problem of cargo thefts in Tennessee and surrounding states. The Tennessee Highway Patrol said they will use the Cargonet system to help disrupt crime networks, increase recovery rates and catch criminals associated with such thefts. The head of the THP believes the relationship will help criminal interdiction efforts so troopers can conduct timely investigations, link recovered goods to owners and remove criminals for interstates. “These trucks may contain from thousands to even millions of dollars worth of cargo and we need to know what’s missing in timely manner so we can look for it,” said Lt. Brad Wilbanks of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. “You know they’ve got to get on the road to get out of here and that’s what we’re trying to do is get them as soon as we know that item is gone or stolen, we want to know what we’re looking for.” Troopers will receive alerts about stolen goods through the network and can use data showing crime patterns to assist in catching criminals.
