Local law enforcement said internet scammers are targeting people who sell items on the Internet, and want you to know the warning signs. Many cases are like those of Mary Utley who tried to sell her wedding dress on Craigslist. The scammer contacted her then sent her a money order for more than double the asking price of the dress. They told Utley to send them a check of the remaining amount to a separate address. When she contacted her bank they told her there was no money in the buyers account. Officials said this particular type of scam is becoming very common, and like Utley, you should always check before you send your items. “She never sent her things, did all the checking, found out that it was bogus, reported it to the sheriff’s department,” said Utley. Grisham also said if your using a site that does not track the buyers information, try to keep your business local.
