School Practices Earthquake Safety
Duck and Cover. No, it was not a scene from the 1950’s cold war era. It was an earthquake safety drill, Tuesday at Thelma Barker Elementary School. “Being in West Tennessee there is the possibility that we may have an earthquake just like we have had tornadoes unexpectedly occur throughout the last couple of years,” said Principal Teresa Tritt. At 10:15, Principal Tritt told the students that the earthquake drill was taking place and to get under their desks. “It was really good and when you do the things you just really need to practice and know what you are going to do to make sure everything goes right,” said Third Grade student Aiden Tuberville. After counting to 60, the students left the school and walked away from the school building. “I want my friends in my classroom to always feel safe. When you are having these drills so if something does happen they do feel safe, said teacher Lisa Bond. “Sometimes it scares me if it is going to be a real drill,” said Student Erin Daines. Experts at the Great Shakeout recommend that when you feel the earth shake, drop to the floor get underneath sturdy furniture and make sure to cover your head. “When I did the earthquake drill I made sure that I was doing everything correctly and getting under my desk very quickly and quietly,” said Student Aiden Tuberville.
