Matching Funds Approved for MKL Runway
There is good news for McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport as city leaders vote to approve funds to help obtain matching funds for runway improvements. Tuesday morning, city council members approved $95,000 as part of a local match to fund a $1.9 million project to upgrade the crosswind runway at the local airport. The state required a 10 percent match form local sources to do the project. Airport officials had requested half of the $190,000 needed for the project from the city and the other half from the county. County commissioners have not voted on their portion of the funding. Airport director Steve Smith said he hopes to get the construction project kicked off in May.
