Union City Resident’s Plunge in Freezing Waters
It was one of the coldest days of the year, but despite the freezing weather, many still chose to jump in the cold water. It was all part of the Polar Plunge in Union City on Saturday morning. The plunge helped to raise money for the Special Olympics, and what organizers call “Freezing’ for a Reason”. More than 30 jumpers dressed up in costumes and even some swimsuits at Aloha Pools and Spa to take place in their first state-wide plunge. Local directors said the money raised by groups, individuals, and sponsors would help local special need individuals participate in the sports competition. Without this money, Assistant Area Director, Alise Kirk said they wouldn’t be able to attend the Special Olympics. Kirk said this year is very special to them because their area, that covers Weakley, Obion, Lake, and Henry counties has not gone to the Special Olympics in 4 or 5 years. Saturday’s polar plunge raised $9,000.
