NAACP Celebrates Founders’ Day
Nearly 50 residents, leaders in the African American community, and Mayor Gist gathered at the Home Missionary Baptist Church Sunday afternoon to celebrate the NAACP’s Founders’ Day. The theme through out the day “We’ve Come This Far by Faith.” The organization started 103 years ago to advance opportunities for African Americans. Organizers honored past presidents of local branches at the church service. Officials said the purpose of the NAACP has not changed. They said they are still focusing on equality in education and socioeconomic improvement for African Americans. “I am excited to have a lot of these young men and women here who have served so diligently, and they are all volunteers, for them to be recognized today,” said President of TN State NAACP Gloria Sweet-Love.
