Hardeman County Board of Education community meetings
The Hardeman County Board of Education wants public input as it prepares to select a new director of schools.
Current director, Dr. Donald L. Hopper, announced his retirement at the Jan. 12, 2012 meeting, after serving as director of schools since the board hired him in July 2005. He has served Hardeman County Schools in a number of educational capacities for the past 20 years.
The board of education voted last week to conduct its own search for Dr. Hopper‘s replacement, effective July 1, 2012. Dr. Hopper‘s contract expires June 30, 2012. Along with voting to conduct its own search, board members voted to set two Saturdays aside this month to hold community meetings to get ideas from the public as to what they‘d like to see in a director of schools.
The meetings will be Feb. 18 at Whiteville Elementary School at 10 a.m., Toone Elementary School at 12 noon, and Hornsby Elementary School at 2 p.m. On Feb. 25, the board will listen to members of the following communities: Grand Junction Elementary School at 10 a.m., Middleton Elementary School, which will include Middleton High School, at 12 noon, and Bolivar Elementary School, which will include Bolivar Central High School and Bolivar Middle School, at 2 p.m.
The meetings will last one hour so board members can stay on schedule. People wishing to give board members their ideas will be limited to two minutes per person. “The purpose of the meetings is to get ideas from the community of what they would like to see in the new director of schools,” said board chairman, Terry King. “In all likelihood, board members won‘t comment unless they need clarification. We want the people who have children in school in Hardeman County as well as business leaders and other elected county officials to give us their ideas.”
