Union University Black History Month Program
An alumnus of a north Jackson university returns to campus for a special Black History Month appearance, Monday. 1979 graduate Sephria Bailey Shuttlesworth was married to Fred Shuttlesworth, a key Civil Rights leader who served along side of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. In addition to being the featured speaker at a Black History program and speaking to a couple of classes, the longtime teacher and principal was the leading facilitator during the luncheon, sharing her perspective about black leadership from the Civil Rights movement until today. “My husband would say, “you haven’t done anything until you’ve lifted somebody else, and so it’s, it’s incumbent upon all of us to help the world to be a better place,” said Sephira Bailey Shuttlesworth, motivational speaker. “To work toward, that beloved community that Dr. King, my husband Dr. Abernathy and so many others worked toward.” The theme at Union for Black History month is ‘Black Leaders in American Culture and History. “
