Students Learn About Civil Rights With The Help Of Skype

Dozens of Milan High School students spent their lunch breaks Tuesday learning about the Civil Rights Movement. It is part of Milan High’s month-long program to celebrate Black History Month. The students watched a video about the children’s march for Civil Rights in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. They even got to Skype with one of the participants, Rev. Gwen Webb-Appling, who was arrested for marching when she was just 14 years old. “As time has passed a lot of times we take for granted that our students know about these types of things, that they know what a struggle it was for African Americans in the United States, especially in the South,” said Government and Economics teacher Cindy Tatum. Organizers told 7 Eyewitness News they are glad the students got to watch the video and ask Appling questions, saying many people do not even know that the children’s march took place.
