Memphis School Official Suspended

The deputy director of the Memphis City Schools has been placed on leave.

Irving Hamer was suspended with pay while outside attorneys investigate a complaint about a comment made to another schools employee at Superintendent Kriner Cash’s home.

Cash hosted what The Commercial Appeal described as a semi-social event Saturday night (http://bit.ly/w6ktuJ ). In a letter to board members Cash stated he received a complaint Thursday that Hamer had “directed inappropriate comments” toward a female schools employee.

In his letter, Cash gave no details, but stated such conduct is unacceptable.

Hamer is 66 and makes about $190,000 a year as the second in command of the city school system.
