Hail Net Gets Early Test
A new hail net under construction at the Volkswagen auto assembly plant in Hamilton County got an early test when severe weather struck.
Golf ball-sized hail pounded the plant, including newly built Passats sitting outside.
The hail net is 30-40 percent complete and protected some of the vehicles. Others were driven onto covered rail cars and still others were taken back inside the plant at the Enterprise South industrial park on Friday.
Volkswagen spokesman Guenther Scherelis said there wasn’t enough cover for all of the more than 1,000 cars and those struck by hail are being assessed for damage, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/y33610).
VW is spending about $5 million dollars to complete the net, which will cover about half of its loading yard.
