Land Owner Says Homeless Can Stay
The owners of Tupelo property used as a hangout by homeless people are opposing city officials’ suggestions to oust squatters from the land.
Doyce Deas, whose family owns several acres in the city, says people who live there in tents and tarps can stay.
Deas told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/GOCn3O ) that the dozen or so homeless will just go somewhere else if they’re forced to leave the land.
Many there say they’ve sought help at The Salvation Army but were turned away. The Salvation Army says it provides free meals to everyone in need, but it limits lodging to those who stay off substances and seek employment.
Mayor Jack Reed Jr. has said the situation is a problem for nearby businesses, but nobody has taken any action yet.
