Dozens of local growers gathered in hopes of learning how to improve marketing their products at local farmer’s markets. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture hosted a free Boot Camp at Jackson’s UT Ag Center, Wednesday, where participants learned from the experts about things such as merchandising, food safety and regulations and sales tax exemptions. Organizers said empowering growers is more important than ever as Farmers Markets across the state gain in popularity. “When that consumer is buying that product, and they’re buying it from that farmer that raised it, they can know that it’s fresh, that it’s locally grown, that it’s strengthening that community, all of those things are very important,” said Hal Pepper extension specialist. The West Tennessee Farmer’s Market in downtown Jackson is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
