Western Ky. County may get Alcohol Vote
BENTON, Ky. (AP) – A western Kentucky county that has barred alcohol sales since Prohibition may get a chance to decide whether to let the liquor flow. A group called Marshall 1st on Thursday delivered a petition to Marshall County Clerk Tim York seeking to have a county-wide vote on alcohol sales. Marshall 1st spokeswoman Sissy Wommack told The Paducah Sun the petition contained about 2,400 signatures – more than the 2,078 needed to put a local option election on the ballot. Under Kentucky law, the judge-executive either reviews the petition or can accept it at face value. If the petition is certified, a referendum must be called within 60 to 90 days. The referendum cannot be held within 30 days of a regular election, such as the May 22 primary.
