South Fulton Changes “Pay To Spray” Policy
A big change to the “Pay To Spray” fire policy in Obion County. The city fire department in South Fulton now responds to to all fires outside the city limits, even if the homeowners are not fire service subscribers. After all the bad “fire” publicity, Wanda Robinson, said she was glad to see the city of South Fulton step-up and do something she believes was right. “It made me very happy to find out that they’re going to actually put the fires out, like I said, it may cost them more money if they don’t pay the rural fee, but at least their fire’s will be put out,” said Robinson. A new rural fire service fee had been passed for the city of South Fulton, and for resident’s who live outside the city limits. The ordinance states that the fire department would answer all fire calls. “I think they thought it would take a lot off the community from being all over the news, everywhere, about the town who let’s people’s homes burn,” said Lynn Napier. But a person who did not pay the $75 annual fire fee and had a fire on their property that was put out by the fire department, would be expected to pay a service charge of $3,500. For someone who did pay the $75 fee, they would also have to pay a service fee, but theirs would be less, at $750. “I think that’s a little bit outrageous,” said Mike Madding. All residents in South Fulton we talked to, said although the price was high, they think this was a better plan for everyone. “I really think this here, even though it’s going to cost a little bit more money, it’s a good thing that at least the people have a chance to save their house,” added Madding. “At least we made an attempt to help somebody in our community, ” said Napier. The new ordinance was put into affect March 15. New yearly fees will be due July 1.
