Liberty Bowl Getting Facelift
The Memphis City Council has approved upgrades to Liberty Bowl Stadium.
According to The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/Heg5q7 ), the plan calls for $9 million in improvements, which the city and FedEx will help pay for.
The shipping giant will pay the cost of a $2.5 million electronic video board. The city will apply to the state for Tourist Development Zone status, which would allow tax revenue to pay off bonds. The University of Memphis offered a $500,000 per year guarantee over 15 years if needed.
Nearly $3 million will go to infrastructure improvements. There will also be better, more efficient lighting and a new synthetic turf field.
Liberty Bowl Stadium opened in 1965.
