The fact that Adam Mayes was once linked to the Bain family by marriage has many West Tennessee parents wondering who they can really trust around their children. Many parents said they are taking a closer look at family friends after the kidnapping and murder in Hardeman County. “As a parent I would just like advise that we are really careful of who we bring around children in our homes as friends, although we may meet someone and we feel like there nice there a good person,” said Victoria, a West Tennessee mother. Local experts said there are two stages of warning signs that are different between adults and children…adults are more likely to want to be in control. “Mainly look at someone who most people would consider wanting to be in control a lot…in there own personal life but also other people’s lives,” said Doc Reedy, a licensed clinical social worker. Reedy said when it comes to children a warning sign in young boys could be if they consistently become oppositional or aggressive following a visit with someone. Reedy said girls tend to become more emotional. “They become more withdrawn socially they may become more tearful, have constant deer in the headlights look in there eyes,” said Doc Reedy. Investigators believe Adam Mayes spent a lot of time with the Bain family and was even staying with them to help them prepare for their move to Arizona. Pictures taken showed a smiling Mayes with Adrienne and Alexandria…Mayes is accused of murdering Adrienne, 14 in her family’s home. “It makes all of us look at the people that’s surrounding us because everyone is really a suspect. Who can you trust you never know,” said Shantay Walker.
