Skyhawks Sweep Softball Doubleheader

There‘s no place like home. There‘s no place like home. Just ask any of the softball players at The University of Tennessee at Martin. After four consecutive tournaments, 18 road games, four extra inning games and seven one-run decisions, the Skyhawks opened the home portion of their 2011 schedule this afternoon at Bettye Giles Field in Skyhawk Park against arch rival and Ohio Valley Conference foe Murray State. How appropriate for the Skyhawks to win the first game of the doubleheader in extra innings and by one run. Junior Jenny Bain plated Chelsea Cary with a single up the middle as the Skyhawks claimed a 6-5 victory in 10 innings over the Racers. The other constant in the Skyhawks first 18 games of the season has been junior pitcher Chelsea Jones. The Tullahoma native entered this afternoon‘s second game with a 4-3 won-loss record and 62 strikeouts. How appropriate for Jones to dominated the Racers in the second game. Jones allowed three hits and struck out a dozen batters en route to a 3-0 complete-game, shutout for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks (12-8. 2-0 OVC) will close out the three-game series with Murray State (3-10, 0-2 OVC) Sunday at Bettye Giles Field in Skyhawk Park. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
