JPD Officer Suspended

An officer with the Jackson Police Department has been suspended after an internal investigation found he was not truthful in an report he filed about the arrest of former North Side High School football player Kirby Ross, 18, of Jackson. In November of 2010, Ross was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, as well as other charges, after an officer said Ross pulled a gun on him. However, days later the felony charge was downgraded to a misdemeanor because other officers on the scene gave different accounts. Investigator Travis Vanover has now been suspended three days without pay for the report he submitted about the arrest on Sherrell Street. The department ruled the information on Vanover’s report was based on assumptions rather than information given by witnesses or another officer. Vanover has 10 days to appeal the decision. Ross agreed to a plea deal shortly after his arrest. He pleaded guilty to all misdemeanor charges and was sentenced to just less than two years probation and 120 hours of community service. As of Thursday evening, the Jackson Police Department said a picture of Inv. Vanover was not available.
