Chanda Franks Arraigned on Indictment

A Haywood County teacher and coach charged with having sex with a student was back in court, Wednesday. Chanda Franks, 34, entered not guilty pleas to a 19-count indictment against her. She was suspended from her position at Haywood High School in Brownsville after an investigation and her arrest last month. There are five counts each of aggravated statutory rape by an authority figure and aggravated statutory rape and nine counts of sexual battery by an authority figure. Court papers show the allegations involve a 14-year-old student. “The general sessions case is till active and we’ve had discussions with the district attorney’s office which indicates we’re going to build everything together,” said Mark Donahoe, Franks’ Attorney. “Everything will be handled at one time through one trial.” Franks, who is free on bond returns to court on May 19.
