‘Worlds Largest’ Raccoon Hunt Begins
Expect to hear the howls of hunting dogs around the hills of Parsons this weekend as the World’s Largest Coon Hunt is underway at the Decatur County Fairgrounds. For 36 years, hunters from around the country have brought truckloads of skilled dogs to roam the hills, hoping to collect first prize. But there’s an underlying reason that so many, come so far to be here. This event is also the longest running fundraiser for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. In fact, this community of 11,000 has managed to raise more than $ 3 million worth of donations during these hunts. It’s far more than just a hunt, too. Thousands of attendees crowd the fairgrounds for home-cooked meals, live music, and special vendors. In fact, most of the visitors say they are not even hunters. The hunt continues until Sunday afternoon. All are welcome, and encouraged to stop by.
