Gas Prices Affecting B&G Club

We’ve all been affected by rising gas prices, but leaders with the Boys and Girls Club said, they too are feeling the pain at the pump. If you’re cringing at the sight of gas near $4 per gallon for the family mini-van, imagine having to budget to fill an entire school bus. The Jackson-Madison County Boys and Girls Club provides after-school activities and transportation for kids. Directors say prices at the pump are squeezing their budget. “We’ve absorbed a lot of the cost because we haven’t raised prices,” said B&G Club Executive Director, Sabrina Anderson. “We told parents initially what the fee would be for the school year.” That fee of $35 per month was determined last July, but Anderson said they may have to re-evaluate this coming July if prices continue to rise. “If the gas prices stay at this level, I know we will have to raise or increase those fees,” said Anderson. “I hate to pass those on to the parents because they’re already paying enough at the pump, but we’ll have to look at raising those fees.” With more money going towards fuel, there’s simply not enough for some of the things kids enjoy most. “We just can’t do as much,” said Anderson. “One of the things that we like to try to do is provide snacks at our program, and we just can’t buy those expensive snacks like the Oreos they like to have or the Nutter Butters. But you look at it, and you just try to make the cost-saving measures wherever that you can.” To find out how you can help the Jackson-Madison County Boys and Girls Club, click on “Seen on 7” for more information
