Lambuth: What Happens Next?

This video is no longer available.

After Lambuth President Bill Seymour announced the closing of Lambuth University Thursday, many people have been left wondering what’s next for the historic campus. City and state leaders told us they fully support bringing in another institution so the campus can continue to be a place of higher education. Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist says some of the Universities interested in the campus he know of are Bethel, Freed-Hardeman, and the University of Memphis. However, the first obstacle facing the school is its financial status. Gist said it will take a lot of planning and help from the community before they can overcome the large debt. “That’s why we have a number of steak holders coming in talking about options, talking perhaps about negotiations that can take place as far as taking care of the debt.” A copy of Lambuth’s JEA bill reveals the university’s utility debt alone is close to $400,000 as of April 8.
