Jackson residents and local postal carriers had a chance to participate in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday. Jackson letter carriers collected food donations as they delivered mail and took them to the RIFA food bank to be sorted, bagged and given to families in need. RIFA said its food inventory is extremely low right now. In April 2011, RIFA had more than 37,000 pounds of food. In 2012, that number dropped to around 8,600 pounds. RIFA distributes more than 2,500 pounds of food a week. Carriers said they collected thousands of pounds of canned foods, Saturday. The National Association of Letter Carriers sponsors the Stanp Out Hunger food drive every year. The annual food drive, which is in its 20th year, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive.
