12 kids affected when student uses pepper spray

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Authorities say 12 students had to be decontaminated after a 10-year-old child used pepper spray at an elementary school in Memphis.

Memphis Fire Department spokesman Wayne Cooke says one child was taken to a hospital after the spraying at Whitney Elementary School early Thursday afternoon. Cooke says the child was having breathing issues but was expected to recover.

Eleven other students had their faces washed at the school to remove the burning effects of the spray.

Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph says investigators are trying to determine where the child got the pepper spray.
