Vols pitcher Owenby arrested on DUI charge
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Tennessee pitcher Drake Owenby faces a DUI charge after a police stop early Sunday.
Knoxville police say Owenby was stopped at 2:44 a.m. Sunday after his car crossed the lane lines several times on Interstate 275. According to police, the 19-year-old Owenby had blood-shot eyes, struggled to concentrate and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He was charged with driving under the influence and underage possession of alcoholic beverages.
Tennessee athletic department spokesman Jimmy Stanton said “we are in the process of gathering the facts and will handle the matter internally.”
Owenby is a freshman left-hander with a 2-0 record, one save and a 4.66 ERA in 11 appearances.
Tennessee was playing a series at Kentucky this weekend, but Owenby remained in Knoxville because of an injured hamstring.
