Nurse Arrested in Connection with Death of Three-Year-Old
MEMPHIS, Tenn.– A licensed nurse was arrested yesterday after she was indicted in the death of a 3-year-old who was under her care. Demequa Bonds, 34, of Cordova was indicted by the Shelby County grand jury on August 6, 2013 on one count of reckless homicide. In February, TBI received an allegation from an administrator with the West Tennessee Healthcare Facility that Bonds was criminally negligent in the death of 3-year-old Kayla Andrews. Andrews was a TennCare recipient who suffered from a medical condition that required her to receive 24 hour a day nursing care. Andrews died in her Bartlett home after the negligent incident caused by Bonds occurred on August 27, 2012. Bonds was a licensed practical nurse employed by ‘Where The Heart Is, Inc.,‘ a state certified home health care agency specializing in providing care to pediatric and ventilator dependent geriatric patients in Shelby, Tipton and Fayette Counties. Bonds was booked into the Shelby County Jail and released on bond.
