Jackson Police Investigate Two Homicides Within Hours

EAST JACKSON — Monday at 11:40 p.m., police responded to a shooting at East Pointe Apartments on 504 Daugherty Street. Alexander Merriweather, 23, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Merriweather was sitting in a living room in the apartment complex, when shots were fired from outside and through a window. At 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to a shooting in Lincoln Courts. Deandre Thomas, 26, was found shot on the back porch of an apartment in the 100 building. Thomas was transported by ambulance and pronounced dead at the hospital. After the shooting, a caller told central dispatch that approximately four armed juveniles boarded a school bus. Police stopped the bus on Lincoln Street. Officers searched all students for weapons, but none were found. The bus was released and continued on its route. At 1:20 a.m., Tuesday, officers responded to a shots fired call on Holland Ave. A house on the 80 block of Holland had been struck. Shell casings were recovered outside and bullets were discovered inside. The house was occupied, but there were no injuries. Investigators are trying to determine what or if any connections exists between these shootings and Monday afternoon’s shooting at the Royal Arms Apartments. Police has developed a person of interest in the shooting at Lincoln Courts.
