DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Nearly 1,000 Union University students got to skip class on Tuesday, but it was all for a good cause. Students and staff members volunteered at 60 projects for the 11th Annual Campus and Community Day. The citywide project started after tornadoes hit the campus in 2002, 2003 and 2008, and students say it’s a way for them to show appreciation to Jackson. WBBJ caught up with one student volunteering at RIFA. Union student Olivia Howard told us she decided to volunteer at RIFA because it reminds her of home. “You know and I wanna give back to them just to be a blessing to them because I know how it feels to be in their shoes,” Howard said. This year’s activities began with chapel service at 8:30 a.m. Most of the projects were completed around noon.
