Autumn Best Time to Start Composting

JACKSON, Tenn. – As leaves continue to fall, experts are urging residents to compost their leaves rather than throwing them out. “All of the leaves are coming down, the grass has to be cut so it’s the perfect time with all the carbons and nitrates in the yard. You can pile them up and make a compost pile,” said Mark Carter, General Manager of Carter’s Nursery. With the holiday’s also right around the corner, disposing the leaves, branches, and other organic materials into a compost pile provides an environmentally friendly way to get rid the waste. “You’re building the soil instead of putting commercial fertilizer. You’re putting actual organic materials back into the earth,” said Carter. Composting also can save you money, not immediately but by spring, the pile should be ready for the garden. “It saves you a lot of money because mulch is not cheap and neither is soil. It’s great you can actually take all the biomass from the trees and plans around your house and turn them into great. Really the best fertilizer on the market.” Madison County residents can get their yard waste picked up on the curb. Jackson Energy Authority will take the waste and compost it if you’re not into gardening. Bags can be picked up for $25 per cubic feet.
