Waveland police arrest man in child’s death

WAVELAND, Miss. (AP) – Waveland police have arrested the father in the death of his baby girl in August.

Police Chief David Allen says 31-year-old Oren Lewis is charged with capital murder. Municipal Court Judge Preston J. Mauffray set bond Monday at $1 million.

Lewis is charged in the Aug. 25 death of 23-month-old Maleah Bush Lewis of Waveland.

The girl died after Lewis reportedly told police she had fallen from a bed while she was asleep. The child, the daughter of Lewis’ former girlfriend, died at a New Orleans hospital. An autopsy showed the girl died of a massive traumatic head injury.

Lewis is a former Hancock County coach who played football for Louisiana Tech.

Lewis is being held in the Hancock County jail.
