Man sentenced to death dies in prison hospital

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A man sentenced to death in two states following a 1987 crime spree has died at a prison hospital in Nashville.

Tennessee Department of Correction spokeswoman Dorinda Carter says 54-year-old Michael Wayne Howell died of natural causes Wednesday morning at the Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility.

Howell was convicted of first-degree murder and grand larceny in Shelby County and sentenced to death in the fatal shooting of 59-year-old Memphis convenience store clerk Alvin Kennedy.

He was also convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in Oklahoma for the shooting death of 23-year-old Air Force Sgt. Charlene Calhoun on Nov. 2, 1987, less than 24 hours after Kennedy was killed.
