Hattiesburg closing in on contract with Groundworx

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – Hattiesburg officials hope to have a contract ready for approval next week with a wastewater treatment company.

Members of the city council met Monday with officials of Groundworx LLC on the final details of a contract to treat the city’s wastewater.

The city and company have been in talks after Groundworx submitted the low bid to create a land-based treatment system that would disperse the city’s treated waste water over some 10,000 acres.

Mayor Johnny DuPree says Groundworx is expected to issue bonds worth between $124 million and $145 million to cover the creation of the new system, which would upgrade and primarily supplant the city’s current disposal method.

City Council President Kim Bradley is hoping to have the contract on next week’s council agenda.
