Camp Shelby adds to buffer zone
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi Army National Guard has purchased 1,522 acres near the southwest corner of Camp Shelby’s perimeter as part of the Army Compatible Use Buffer Program to limit the encroachment of training activities on nearby residential and commercial sites.
Weyerhaeuser sold the land, which will be partially enrolled in the State of California’s carbon market offset program.
Retired Lt. Col. Joe Knott tells The Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/18VzCyL ) selling the carbon sequestration credits can earn more than $10 million over the next 99 years, which is planned for furthering the buffer program.
The Compatible Use Buffer Program aims to maximize usable area within military installations by adding buffer zones to the outside of areas likely to produce noise, dust and other factors undesirable to commercial and residential sites.
