Man dies after falling into Memphis lake

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Authorities say a 24-year-old man died after falling into an icy lake in Memphis.

Memphis Fire Department spokesman Wayne Cooke says two men were walking on ice that had formed on Coro Lake when they fell in Wednesday.

Cooke says one of the men, estimated to be about 21 or 22, was able to get out of the lake and crawl on the ice to safety.

Cooke says the other man was not able to get out and spent about 40 minutes in the water before he was removed. He did not survive.

Cooke says there was a layer of ice on the surface but the lake had not completely frozen. Memphis had below-freezing temperatures this week.
