Couple turns former nightclub into a place of worship

JACKSON, Tenn. — A former Jackson nightclub shut down after being deemed a public nuisance has become a place of worship. Rhonda Pettigrew and her husband, Danny, transformed the building that once housed the club Desperados into non-denominational church. “It’s very unconventional,” Rhonda said. “Never in a million years would we have thought that that’s what we were [going to] do, but it just worked.” Some would call it divine intervention. “The timing was perfect,” Rhonda said. “The space was perfect and we knew instantly that it was the building.” The Pettigrews say it took more than two months of construction to turn the club into Destiny Church. “You gotta realize that the building was here was a club for 30 years, so everything inside here had to be redone a new,” Danny said. The church renovated about 9,000 square feet of the facility. Once the first phase is complete, they plan to renovate another 4,000 square feet. “This church is [going to] be like a lighthouse for people that [are] lost,” Danny said. The building, once a safety concern, becomes a safe haven. “Regardless of denomination, regardless of color, regardless of age, this is a place we desire to be a place of refuge for anybody in any situation,” Rhonda said. Destiny Church officially opens the doors at the new location on Friday. Friday July 11: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony/Grand Opening at 11:30. There will be a tour following the ceremony.
