Kingsport alderman resigns after DUI arrest
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (AP) – An East Tennessee city official has stepped down after being charged over the weekend with driving under the influence.
Kingsport Mayor Dennis Phillips said Alderman Jantry Shupe resigned Monday from the city’s governing board.
The Kingsport Times-News (http://bit.ly/1n45pOa) reports the move came after Shupe was arrested July 4 by the Tennessee Highway Patrol and charged with DUI. The newspaper reports it was Shupe’s second DUI arrest in just over a year.
Shupe did not return calls from the newspaper seeking comment.
In his letter of resignation, Shupe said he has enjoyed serving citizens, but “it is very important that I take some time to deal with personal matters for me and my family.”
