JACKSON, Tenn. — A new online campaign is petitioning Facebook users to take a break from the the addictive social networking site. It’s daring users to spend their time doing more productive things. The campaign is called “99 Days of Freedom” and it is asking Facebook’s 1 billion users to take a summer detox and step away. So far, just 2,600 active users have taken the vow of abstinence from the site. Some said Facebook is way too addictive. “It’s kind of like smoking,” Facebook user Trey West said. “I mean if you want to quit, you’ll quit.” The average American checks Facebook for a half hour each day. Now some are saying it is becoming a problem and to just log-out. “I don’t use Facebook because I think it’s a waste of time,” Jennifer Barns said. “A lot of trouble comes from it.” Some said it would be hard for them to unplug from Facebook. “I use Facebook 24/7,” Nicole Brown said. “Every time I get a chance, on a break, I’m on Facebook.” “99 Days of Freedom” promises that in return, users taking part in the experiment will recoup more than 28 hours of their lives, which many are excited about. “I think it would be a good thing,” Rick McCabe said. “We don’t really need it. Unless you’re putting inspirational stuff on it.” Jennifer Barns believes people could spend their time doing more productive things. “Instead of doing stuff around the house. They get on the computer and stay on the computer the rest of the evening. Instead of having family time,” Barns said. Only time will tell how many users actually take the plunge and stop checking their news feed for friends’ selfies and statuses. If you are looking to take the pledge and log out of Facebook, you can visit the campaign’s website at 99daysoffreedom.com and sign up.
