Memorial service held on 50th anniversary of crash
PARROTTSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A memorial service has been held to honor 39 people who died 50 years ago when a plane went down in Cocke County.
The Greenville Sun (http://bit.ly/1k9CKYk) reports about 80 people, including family members and first responders, attended the service on Wednesday near Parrottsville. After a short service to remember loved ones and comfort survivors, a wreath and flowers were laid near where United Airlines Flight 823 crashed into a hillside on July 9, 1964.
Investigators weren’t able to determine the cause of the onboard fire that caused the crash.
Greene County resident Tom Dier organized the service with members of the Trentham family, who owned the land where the crash occurred.
Dier said he hoped the service gave some closure to family members of the victims.
