Former Millington mayor pleads guilty to bribery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Prosecutors say Millington’s former mayor has pleaded guilty to a bribery charge.

The Shelby County district attorney’s office said Monday that 65-year-old Richard Hodges faces sentencing on Oct. 24 after he pleaded guilty to solicitation to commit bribery of a public servant. Hodges is expected to ask Judge Paula Skahan to suspend a three-year prison sentence and place him on probation.

Prosecutors say Hodges asked Millington business owner Marlin Roberts for a $500 cash loan. Hodges told Roberts that he would take back a police identification badge given to Roberts by the city’s former police chief if he did not get the money.

The conversation between Hodges and Roberts was recorded by authorities.

Roberts pleaded guilty Monday to official misconduct for threatening to arrest a Shelby County commissioner.
